Writing a eulogy speech is not the easiest thing in the world. Since it is usually a formal speech, you could not go in front of the crowd unprepared. You should be ready with a well written speech highlighting the positive characteristics of the person and making sure that each of the guests remembers him in a positive light as well. It is important to not only consider the person you are going to talk about but also consider those who would be listening to the eulogy. You should think of what they might ponder on after you have made your speech. Would their rather negative understanding of the person remain or would they see him as a person who has done great things while he was living? Would they be offended with your words or would they be deeply affected that they would be moved to tears?

One thing to avoid any bad reactions from the listeners, the close friends and the relatives of the dead is to keep the eulogy simple yet moving. Mentioning the minor unsightly things the person used to do would be unnecessary for it would only ruin the mood at the funeral. If you are not very familiar with the relations of the person, you should make prior research to take into account what they might want to hear at the funeral. There might be guests who practice a different culture and might get insulted by your speech so you have to make sure that your speech is both culture and gender sensitive.

If you are really attached to the person, it is natural for you to have major difficulties in making a eulogy speech.  Often times, your emotions might get in the way and you would end up rambling in front of the many guests at the funeral. You might forget your lines and instead of saying that carefully written speech, you will end up saying a whole new different thing and the guests would be confused. To prevent this from happening, you should not be ashamed to carry with you note cards with cues written boldly. You would not need to worry about what the guests would think of your note cards for everyone at the funeral would understand perfectly why you might need cueing.

In writing a eulogy speech, you should not fight the emotions that are inside you. Losing a loved one is a perfect excuse to be sad so it is just fine for the speech to sound sad, too. However, making the speech purely gloomy would not help in making the guests feel better with their loss so it is recommended to add witty comments on your speech to lighten the mood. You could always mention a funny thing or two about the person or quote one of his favorite jokes. You could also include lines from his favorite movie or tell a humorous secret you know about him.

Once you have gathered enough information in writing the eulogy, you should write in an organized manner. If you are going to talk about the life of a person, you should have a point and you should state it clearly. Those who were closely involved with the person would remember even the smallest details of the person’s life so you need not mention them. Just focus on the most memorable moments the person had and highlight them to better instill it to the hearts and minds of his loved ones.
